Nuts and Keto diet

The ketogenic diet is a low-carbohydrate and high-fat diet.

If you drastically reduce your carbohydrate intake, your body will be brought into a metabolic state that is also referred to as ketosis (hence the name ketogenic diet). If your body is put in a state of ketosis, your body is capable of burning fat incredibly efficiently and converting it into energy. The fat in your liver is also converted into ketones, which provide extra energy to your brain.

A ketogenic diet is an effective way to lose weight. Various studies have shown that the ketogenic diet works much better for losing weight than a low-fat diet.

Nuts are generally seen as a healthy and responsible low-carbohydrate snack. They are easy to take with, available almost everywhere and contain a lot of proteins, healthy fats, vitamins, minerals and fibers.

One of the most important properties of nuts for the ketogenic diet is the high fat and low carbohydrates content.

But not all nuts have the same fat content and carbohydrates. The nuts that have a lower fat content contain more carbohydrates.

You will find the lower carb (i.e., keto) options on the left.

The figures above the nuts represent the amount of net carbohydrates in 100 grams.

The nuts on the right - especially cashew nuts - must be avoided on Keto.

The nuts in the middle are not the best Keto options, but you can probably get away a bit here and there.

Pecans, Brazil nuts and macadamia nuts, all on the left, have the lowest amount of carbohydrates per serving and can be enjoyed freely on the keto diet.

Although nuts can be great sources of nutrients and energy in the form of fat, it is important to control your portion sizes so that you do not go overboard with eating nuts.

It is wise to limit your portions to one or two per day. A portion of nuts is about the size of a handful. If you want to be more precise, a portion size is close to: 24 almonds, 18 medium-sized cashews, 12 hazelnuts, 8 medium-sized Brazil nuts, 12 macadamia nuts, 35 peanuts, 15 pecan halves or 14 walnut halves.
